Q. How did you spend your time with the international students?
    • At first, we talked about each other’s countries. Then, we did a hands-on activity where they painted clay maneki-neko (beckoning cat) figures. What left the deepest impression on me was when the two students cried as they were leaving—it was very moving.

    • In the first half, we played a card game “the Hyakunin Isshu (a classic Japanese poetry card game)”. In the second half, we had tea time with coffee and cheesecake. Since I also studied abroad, we had lively conversations about topics like career paths and life planning.

    • Our visitor kindly played games with our young daughter and enjoyed sencha (green tea) and traditional Japanese sweets.

    • We introduced Japanese culture, made dorayaki together, did calligraphy, and had nice conversations.

    • We had lively conversations from beginning to end. We talked about Sweden’s well-developed welfare policies and how people enjoy summer homes, as well as our memories of traveling to Taiwan.

    • We enjoyed Japanese sweets while chatting.

    • We made and ate takoyaki together, and played a train-themed karuta game. The visitors were interested in parenting, so we had meaningful talks about their childhood and their relationships with their parents.

    • Our visitor kindly brought and made milk tea from his home country for us. We played games like karuta and sugoroku together. We also wore yukata, learned a traditional dance from his home country, and danced the Bon Odori together. I enjoyed hearing about his home country.

Q.What motivated you to participate in the home visit program?
    • I wanted to interact with local people. <Taiwan>
    • In Tokyo, it is difficult to make Japanese/local friends. I wanted to participate in this event to befriend local people and feel like I am part of the community here. I also wanted to learn more about Japanese culture, and share a bit about my experiences as someone who grew up outside of Japan.<Australia>
    • I wanted to feel the atmosphere of a real Japanese family and get a deeper understanding of the Japanese culture.<China>
    • I take it as an opportunity to network and get to tell someone about my country.<Kenya>
Q.What was especially memorable or enjoyable for you?
    • Everything. Especially playing games with the kids of host family, enjoying tea and snacks with the host family <Pakistan>
    • I was genuinely impressed by every part of the day. From the moment I arrived at the MIFA event, the staff and volunteers were incredibly kind and made the activities fun and welcoming. That warmth continued when I met my host family they paid such thoughtful attention to every detail and treated me as if I were already part of their family. Their hospitality was so genuine that it actually made me feel a little homesick in the best possible way, because it reminded me of my own family back home. Altogether, the kindness of the people at MIFA and the caring atmosphere in my host family’s home left the strongest impression on me.<Thailand>
